GWT 2.5 Release Candidate 1

Just in time for the Google IO 2012, the GWT team released a first release candidate for the upcoming GWT version 2.5.

The download can be found in the GWT google code project downloads page. What’s inside? The new closure compiler, elemental and probably much more.

Unfortunately no release notes yet.

  1. Sebastian says:

After releasing GWT 2.5 and presenting the new strategy with the “GWT steering commitee” I strongly belief that GWT in the long run is dead. Google hands over the responsibilities and will internally focus more on Dart. I’m pretty sure we won’t here from GWT at the upcoming IOs again. That there was a talk abaout migrating from GWT to Dart fits really good in the big picture.

    • Yes, it’s uncertainty(*) time!

It is hard to predict what is going to happen. The actual release 2.5 is a release that points to the exact other direction, where Google does improve GWT impressively. Why should anyone work so hard to improve stable and running compiler, if it is a dead project? Besides, the people in the steering board all have one in common: they have build something and rely massively on GWT. Honestly, Google did not so good on things that weren’t directly related to the compiler. So let’s welcome the steering board and hope the openness will improve GWT even more, from a non compiler point of view! ;-)

(*) Uncertainty: The lack of certainty, A state of having limited knowledge where it is impossible to exactly describe the existing state, a future outcome, or more than one possible outcome.
